Types Of Dehumidifier
There are two types of dehumidifiers available in the market.
A desiccant dehumidifier is a substance like the Silica Gel, which attracts the water particles in the ear and binds it on its surface. A desiccant dehumidifier works on the principle of adsorption, requiring the need to change it after a certain period after it is no longer able to bind more water molecules to its surface. After removal, it can be freed of the water molecules on its surface, and again placed inside to resume its work.
Desiccant dehumidifiers are slow as compared to electrical dehumidifiers because, in an electrical dehumidifier, adsorption doesn’t happen.
Recharging of a desiccant dehumidifier can be done into two ways:
- The first one is by removing the upper layer of the dehumidifier as water molecules are attached to the upper layer only. Remove the top layer, and the next layer will be as good as a new one, ready to be put in the safe for adsorption. Removing the upper layer should be done with care to minimize the loss of the material, and there were increasing its lifetime.
- The second process is by heating the dehumidifier so that the water molecules at the surface get enough energy to detach themselves from the molecules of the dehumidifier and get released into the atmosphere. Heating is preferred by most of the people as it is quick and can be done without damaging the top player.
An electrical dehumidifier will increase the temperature of the safe by few degrees so that the water molecules in the year cannot lose energy to the surroundings and settle down on the surface of Guns and Ammo, thereby preventing the formation of rust on the metallic surfaces. The electrical dehumidifier uses electricity and will affect your electricity bill to a certain extent.

Which type of dehumidifier to use?
Both the type of dehumidifiers is good for your gun. It depends upon the size of your safe and the Guns you keep in it. For a safe of small size, a desiccant dehumidifier like Silica Gel works extremely fine, and there is no net to use an electrical one. However, if you are using a large gun safe with a lot of guns in it, then it is recommended to use an electrical dehumidifier as it will quickly remove all the moisture from inside and will keep your firearms safe and sound.
In general, gun safe owners prefer having an electrical dehumidifier as they are quick and more efficient than the dehumidifiers of the other type. If you are using a desiccant dehumidifier like Silica Gel and have a multilevel gun safe prefer using at least one dehumidifier on each level to make this process fast and efficient.
As is now evident that a gun safe cannot perform its work properly without the presence of a dehumidifier, it will be a good idea to buy a dehumidifier along with the gun safe which will remove all the water molecules from inside the safe and create an obstacle in the occurrence of a chemical reaction. This will prevent corrosion and thereby give a long life to your guns, ammunition, and save your powder from getting damped.
Check the size of your safe and decide which dehumidifier to be used and in what quantity. Greater the size off the shelf and the number of guns, greater will be the number of dehumidifiers used to keep the safe devoid of water molecules.
